Pretty Maids “It Comes Alive (Maid In Switzerland)”

Frontiers 2012

Danish band Pretty Maids have been together for just over 30 years and in that time have sold albums probably in the hundreds of thousands, yet they have not attained the wider recognition that others in their genre have, except for a period in the 1990’s when the band were very popular in Japan.

With a heady mixture of influences including Deep Purple, Iron Maiden and 80’s Whitesnake, “It Comes Alive” is a 21 track live extravaganza that covers the band’s 12 studio albums. Heavy yet melodic songs, with big ballads sitting alongside some of the band’s more metallic material, decent guitar solos and stabs of keyboard throughout – this album should appeal to fans of the band whilst also picking up some newer ones along the way.

“Hell On High Heels” , “Love Games” and “Clay” are good examples of the band’s ‘80’s sound along with The Scorpions like “Queen of Dreams” and “Another Shot”, the latter featuring a bluesy guitar intro which blossoms into the sound of MTV metal in the ‘80’s. “Another Shot” is Maiden meets Metallica riffing whilst listening to “Destination Paradise” you can imagine Bruce Dickinson giving it his all.

“Walk Away” is a slower Whitesnake style love song and is well received by the crowd, as is fellow sing along slow number “Savage Heart” which is nicely piano led. Other highlights include the Ronseal “Does As It Says On The Tin” approach of “Rock The House”, “Scream” and the show closer ”Red Hot and Heavy”.
“It Comes Alive” is a good live album and Pretty Maids are a band that should not be overlooked.
