I have come across Stone Axe before, recently reviewing their last studio album ‘Stone Axe II’ which proved to be an enjoyable recording. The band are purveyors of excellent 70’s tinged rock, borrowing heavily from the top bands of the time and paying a fairly accurate homage to all.
This CD was recorded live at the Roadburn festival and captures the band in fine form. Over the 14 tracks on the disc you can hear elements of Thin Lizzy, Led Zep, and Bad Co. to name but a few, but all are played with an indelible ‘Stone Axe’ stamp put on them.
Highlights of the CD are opener ‘Stonin’ and the excellent ‘ We Know It’s Still Rock N Roll’ but all tracks are top class. Stone Axe are a classic rock experience and sound like an exciting prospect live, I could see them going down a storm on a sunny afternoon at a festival. This is a band well worth checking out.
