The Sunpilots – King Of The Sugarcoated Tongues

Honeytrap Records 2012

The Sunpilots are antipodean indie rockers and this is their second album following on from their 2008 debut ‘Living Receiver’ which won a lot of critical acclaim down under. This album though is the result of a long period of being based in Berlin and touring across Europe.

The album is a bit of a concept based on the collapse of society and will be released on-line as 8 chapters. Musically The Sunpilots produce indie rock hinting at a Muse influence with a bit of A Perfect Circle thrown in for good measure.

Listening to the 8 tracks, sorry, chapters, there are some good melodies and clever ideas on show, all of which are well played, but for me the album and the individual tracks therein were overlong and disjointed. I tried listening to the disc several times and there is a lot to like especially on tracks ‘ The Captain’ and ‘The Piper’s Mirror’, but my original opinion was not swayed by repeated listens.

Overall then, good musicians, clever songs, but not a rounded package.
