Iron Maiden: The Ultimate Unauthorized History of the Beat by Neil Daniels

Jawbone Press www.jawbonepress.com £24.95 224pp ISBN 9781908279231

Neil Daniels fresh from his book on Metallica’s early years now turns his attention to one of the metal bands of all time, Iron Maiden. This is a lovely illustrated tome with live concert photos plus memorabilia including concert tickets, posters and backstage passes. Good, quality finish – this is no cheap cash in book.

The book takes you though the band’s history from their ever evolving line-ups at the 70′s and early 80′s until Bruce Dickinson took over the mike stand. By using archive interviews and more recent online interviews with current and former band members the book overcomes any problems it could have had with it being ‘unofficial’.

An interesting feature is a review of each studio album by fellow guest writers including Mick Wall (who himself has written a few books on the band), Gary Bushell, Martin Popoff and Ian Christie. For the completest there is a list of all the band’s live dates – it is amazing how concerts they have played down the years. The setlists from the various tours are also included.

There are interesting background pieces such as the rivalry between Iron Maiden and Judas Priest (Priest for me!) and John Tucker’s brief but fascinating piece on Maiden and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

For a reasonably priced illustrated history to the band you can’t go wrong and ideal for fans/collectors and the more casual metal reader.
