Just released “God Told Me To” is the 6th solo album from ex-Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie and David Lee Roth guitarist John 5. As with his previous albums all the tracks are instrumental and switch between electric and acoustic.
Of the album’s 10 tracks, 4 have already been released as singles- including a re-working of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”, on which the vocals are swapped for guitar parts, this actually works very well and this impressive effort easily matches Eddie Van Halen’s work on the original.
John 5 has worked with a number of high profile artists outside of his genre over the last few years- including the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Rod Stewart- and some of the album’s acoustic tracks reflect this, “Ashland Bump” having a Skynyrd like feel to it, “Creepy Crawlers” is almost sensitive, whilst “Noche Acosador” is more Spanish/Flamenco styled.
The album opens with the hard paced “Welcome To Violence”, “Killafornia” reminds me of latter day Motley Crue, then we have the brutal “The Hill of the Seven Jackals”. Whilst John 5’s solo work is mostly instrumental, there is one track on the album that is crying out for vocals and this is “The Lust Killer”.
“God Told Me To” is a fan friendly release which boasts back and front covers painted by Rob Zombie and a bonus DVD which is better than most seen over the last few years. Featuring promo videos, studio and live footage and horror host Mike Odd bringing a B-Movie style look into the world of John 5, the DVD could easily have been released in its own right.
As a guitarist, writer and general musical collaborator, John 5 is usually kept busy- hopefully not too much that we lose sight of his solo work, as this kind of album is always welcome.
