Trioscapes – Separate Realities

I’m not 100% certain, but there’s a damn good chance I have found my favorite album of 2012. Trioscapes debut release Separate Realities on Metal Blade is one of the best, craziest, coolest albums I’ve ever heard. If you know me, you know I’m a tremendous Frank Zappa fan. I tend more towards the jazz Zappa, with the rock stuff right behind. I’m not a jazzhead per se, but I definitely have a deep appreciation for it. Indeed I dig that crazy sound man! Yeah!

Trioscapes is comprised of Between the Buried and Me’s bassist Dan Briggs, Walter Fancourt (sax/flute,) and Matt Lynch (drums.) The story is that Briggs contacted Fancourt and Lynch about a one-off jam, possibly a live show or two, playing “Celestial Terrestrial Commuters” from the legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra. One thing led to another and now we are blessed with six tracks of some of the most incredible stuff. From the albums opener “Blast Off” with its crazy schizophrenic syncopation to its smooth jazzy jam, I knew I was going to love this album. This leads into the title track which is a nice almost King Crimson-esque quiet, proggy piece. Then there’s the straight out of jazz hell “Wazzlejazzlebof” that puts me in mind of the crazy jazz stuff Zappa did. Their take on the Mahavishnu piece that brought them together in the first place is absolutely brilliant.

You don’t necessarily need to be a fan of jazz to enjoy what Trioscapes is doing with Separate Realities. I think if people would open their minds to some new music, they may just realize that there is more to life than just black metal. This is a brilliant album that will make numerous trips to my player over the next lifetime.
