DANKO JONES – Bring On The Mountain

DVD Bad Taste Records 2012

With their brand of honest, couldn’t give a f@ck rock n roll Canada’s Danko Jones are a band that should be a lot bigger than they already are.  With blues, punk and sleaze elements in their sound, the band would sound perfectly at home on a Jackass movie soundtrack. New double DVD set “Bring On The Mountain” contains a 90 minute documentary about the band, a short film and a 2nd disc packed with live footage and music videos- and is one of the most fan friendly packages I have seen for a long time.

The documentary gives the viewer a real insight into the band and starts before the formation of Danko Jones back in 1996. Gigging for 3 years before they released any material, the band really learned their craft in a way that bands just don’t do these days- can you imagine a band now touring with no merchandise or CDs for sale? There is some very clever editing throughout and the Danko Jones story is told in an amusing and interesting way, interspersed with interviews, live and studio recording footage covering the lifetime of the band so far. Disc 1 is rounded off by “The Ballad of Danko Jones”- a 25 minute short film featuring the likes of Lemmy, Elijah Wood, Selma Blair and Ralph Macchio, amongst others, and based on three of the videos from the band’s 2010 album “Below The Belt”.

So, to disc 2, where we get 14 career spanning live performances- from early rehearsal room footage to the festival stage, it’s all here. As is every music video the band has produced- 19 of them in total.

Singer/guitarist Danko and long time musical partner, bass player John “JC” Calabrese, may have been through a number of drummers but they have remained consistently focused, and more importantly, consistently good. If you haven’t stumbled across Danko Jones by now, I would recommend starting with 2010’s “Below The Belt” album as this is one of my favourite albums of the last few years and finds the band at its best so far.

Their 7th studio album and this should be with us later this year.
