Rosala Records [2012]
Graham Gouldman certainly knows his way around writing a hit tune, not only for the bands he has been in 10CC and Wax, but he has written hits for numerous other artists from the Yardbirds to Ricky Martin.
This is a gem of an album with many delights along the way. ‘The Halls Of Rock ‘N’ Roll’ is song about the backstage heroes of the music biz like the DJ’s, PR, roadies etc. It neatly mixes a 60’s feel with a more modern vibe.
The single ‘Daylight’ is a moving tribute to the late Andrew Gold, who he worked with in Wax. The sound has a distinct air of Jeff Lynne about it. ‘Ariella’ is bound to be a single as it is a breezy pop song, perfect for daytime radio.
‘Then It’s Gone’ sounds uncannily like a Travelling Wilburys tune in its riff and the way Graham Gouldman sometimes sings it recalls the late, great George Harrison to these ears. There is a Latin flavour to ‘Any Day Now’, mainly due to the fact the song was written for Ricky Martin. ‘Black Gold’ is an instrumental tribute to one of Gouldman’s musical heroes the Shadows, made all the more special as Shadows drummer Brian Bennett guests on it.
Enjoyable listen and perfect for those who like fellow tunesmiths Jeff Lynne and Paul McCartney. ****
