Velvet Revolver – Let it Roll- Live In Germany

Eagle Vision 2012

Filmed in 2008, Velvet Revolver “Let it Roll- Live In Germany “finds the band near the end of the tour in support of second album “Libertad” and days away from splitting up, although you would get no sense of that from the show itself- although given we now know of the band’s internal tensions, Slash’s t-shirt could have been directed at soon to depart vocalist Scott Weiland.

The concert was filmed for legendary German music show Rockpalast and contains 18 tracks which covers Stone Temple Pilots, Guns n Roses and both Velvet Revolver albums, although  predominantly the recently released “Libertad”. Classics such as “Mr Brownstone”, “Sex Type Thing”, “Patience” and “It’s So Easy” blending nicely with newer tracks like “Just Sixteen”, “She Builds Quick Machines” and “Get Out The Door”- and you do wonder where the band would have headed with album number three, if they had made it, as the songs on “Libertad” do not equate with the relatively disappointing sales it achieved on release.

With “Set Me Free” and “Slither” providing a sonic punch to the chest, the gentler side of the Velvet Revolver repertoire comes out via tracks “The Last Fight”, “Fall To Pieces” and of course “Patience”.

With Slash busy with his solo career, Duff McKagan about to tour with Loaded and Weiland reunited with former band Stone Temple Pilots you would think that any hope of a reunion was not on the cards, however, the band did get together at a recent charity event to play a handful of tracks and rumours of “studio meetings” are currently doing the rounds- although swiftly denied by the top hatted one.

Should “Let it Roll- Live In Germany“be the last we see of Velvet Revolver then it is not a bad reminder of what they could, and indeed did, do.

But my rock n roll loving friends, that is not all, because those lovely people at Eagle Vision have also released a BluRay edition of 2010’s “Live In Houston” DVD.  As well as that gig you also get the “Let it Roll- Live In Germany “ AND a host of bonus material including “The Making of Melody and Tyranny”, the “Re-Evolution” interview and “Tierra Roja Sangre Roja” a mini documentary that finds the band in Rio and contains interviews, band and live footage.

If you have not yet seen “Live In Houston” the DVD, it was filmed on the band’s earlier tour in support of the “Contraband” album and features some great live performance interspersed with interview footage.

As I wrote at the time of the original release, will Velvet Revolver ever do it all again? Only time will tell.
