Little Cat Records (2012)
Camille O’Sullivan has a strong following and reputation in her native Ireland, along with many rave reviews based on her live performances. Slightly unusual is the fact that she is a performer, not your usual singer/songwriter. In fact she even has Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody write one song especially for this album, ‘These Days’.
Her interpretations of other people’s songs makes you want to seek down the originals. This is definitely the case with ‘Revelator’, the original was by Gillian Welch and having not heard this song before it has a sparse vocal and arrangement, along with the version of Nine Inch Nail’s ‘Hurt’ the best song on the album. It is worth noting as well that Camille interprets the songs, rather than do straight cover versions.
A couple of Radiohead covers make the album and ‘True Love Waits’ is another shiver down the spine moment. Personally I am not overly taken by the Nick Cave covers.
A varied and interesting set of covers from an artist who I am sure excels in an live environment.
