FEN – Of Losing Interest

Ripple Music

Fen hail from Vancouver in Canada and they master in prog metal. This is the band’s fifth album, following on from 2010’s ‘Trails Out Of Gloom’ which was greeted with positive reviews in many countries.

The band combine more traditional prog  passages with heavy riffs creating a unique sound. The band certainly know the way around their respective instruments  and have the talent to pull off the complex passages. Vocalist and guitarist, Doug Harrison has a good, strong vocal style which fits well with the prog delivery. The guitar work throughout is also excellent with both Harrison and Sam Levin putting in a solid shift.

Tracks worthy of note are the album title,  ‘Of Losing Interest’, ‘The Glove’ which is a short, jagged track full of choice riffs and  ‘ Snake Path’ which again provides a quick prog hit with which to round off the album.

There are some excellent tracks on this album with more than enough going on to hold the listener’s interest. Not quite in the Rush league when it comes to Canadian prog, but they would provide a decent support.
