CRUSHER JONES – Bold Little Stranger

This is a quirky little album which runs through indie rock, country, prog and all points in between. On my first listen through the album I was particularly struck by the guitar work which reminded me of Steve Hackett’s work with Genesis. As it turns out the main man, songwriter and guitarist Jeff Collins played that very role in LA Genesis tribute band Gabble Ratchet.
There is a lot of early Genesis influence throughout the album especially on the track ‘Field Of Crosses’ which has a majestic prog mid-section. There is also a fair bit of XTC in the mix which adds to the rather off-kilter feel on most of the tracks, but above all the melody shines through.
As well as Collins the rest of the assembled band are no slouches either with Billy Sherwood who spent time in Yes on bass and Scott Conner on drums who again has played with various members of Yes over the years. Other stand-out moments are the country tinged ‘Whisky Goes Down’, the short instrumental interlude of ‘The Day The Sun Burned Out’ and the catchy ’Thank You For Trying To Kill Me’.
This is an interesting and enjoyable album which should appeal to quite a wide spectrum, especially those with a love of Mr Hackett’s guitar work.
