MEAT LOAF – Guilty Pleasure Tour

(DVD/CD) Store For Music

A big show here, show being the operative word. And that makes it a mixed bag, but it’s still a lot of fun.

Recorded in Australia, this setting is elaborate, and from the outset it’s obvious ML has gone into Bruce Springsteen mode with a large band (2 guitars, 2 keyboards, saxophone, 2 sexy backing singers et al) and video projection.

The gig opens with Hot Patootie / Time Warp medley (from Rocky Horror Picture show in which he starred), followed by If It Ain’t Broke, Break It and Bat Out Of Hell, a solid start to any show by any standards. The emphasis throughout is on the band sound, which is as grandiose as it is rocking. Don’t expect solos and shredding, it’s not that kind of show, although the acoustic guitar spotlight is a nice break.

Some tracks are markedly more rocking, others more commercial, yes Meat Loaf can do both with aplomb. You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth, I Would Do Anything For Love and Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad both stand out.  Some of the songs are sung almost as a duet with the backing singers.

The sound recording is spot on, and while at times he may struggle to the hit the notes, the vocal performance is largely excellent and solid. Meat Loaf is not as energetic as he once was but still holds a commanding presence.

Even though there are breaks between songs filled with rapturous applause, the lack of any rapport with the crowd give the medley / show feel.

The show runs to the best part of 2 hours, and there is a bonus documentary on the DVD. The CD features 70 minutes audio.

Fans will love this.
