PETER GABRIEL – Secret World Live

Eagle Vision (DVD)

What can you say about Peter Gabriel liv e- great stage show, tight band, guaranteed to entertain? All this and more- ever the showman, the vocals are stunningly good and there are few front men who are able to use their stage craft to command an audience like he does. Filmed in Italy in 1993, this live show was in support of the recently released “Us” album. This is a very visual affair, with groundbreaking screen visuals and a live show that is every bit as theatrical as you would expect.

The show opens with the cleverly staged “Come Talk To Me” and includes some great moments, such as the atmospherically slowed down intro to “Steam”, then the track itself, the haunted opening of “Across The River” or the rhythmic “Shaking The Tree”. However, it is tracks like “Kiss That Frog”, obvious highlight “Solsbury Hill”, “Secret World” and duet “Don’t Give Up” (featuring Paula Cole ably taking Kate Bush’s part) that steal the show. Then we come to what is possibly one of the best songs of its era “Sledgehammer”- simply awesome!! Special mention must also be made of the intriguingly filmed “Digging The Dirt”, this features some form of head cam that gives some interesting screen shots of Gabriel.
“Secret World Live” is much more than the standard live DVD though, bonus material includes the track “Red Rain” which was cut from the original release, a great version that makes you wonder how they could have left it out. Other extras include the quiet version of “Steam”, behind the scenes footage and, what is always the best bit of film- the time lapse shots of the stage being set up and broken down.

“Secret World Live” is a great live DVD that puts some younger bands to shame. With Gabriel also shortly to release the 25Th Anniversary edition of the “So” album fans will no doubt feel somewhat spoiled.
