(3CD) Eagle Rock 2012
This is a re-issue of the original 2001 release that featured songs from ‘Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band’ (1990), ‘Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band Volume 2: Live From Montreux’ (1993) and ‘Ringo Starr and His Third All-Starr Band-Volume 1’ (1997) plus previously unreleased live material from 1995, 1997 and 2000. Ringo Starr certainly has a grade A contact book and it is quite poignant that some of the artists on here are sadly no longer with us – the Band’s Levon Helm and Rick Danko, Clarence Clemmons and John Entwhistle.
Highlights include Dave Edmunds on ‘Girl Talk’ and ‘I Hear You Knockin’, who sounds as good as, if not better than, when these songs were first recorded. Simon Kirke makes a decent go at Bad Company’s ‘Shooting Star’ but Free’s ‘Al Right Now’ is not really suited to his vocals and to be honest only Paul Rodgers can nail this one! Elsewhere Jack Bruce performs a couple of Cream classics and Eric Carmen gives a spine tingling performance of his hit ‘All By Myself’.
Not to be out done Ringo performs a mix of Beatles classics he had a hand in writing or originally sang on, plus some of his solo songs like ‘Photograph’. ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ rounds off the three disc set in style.
Do go and see a Ringo Starr show, a real treat lies in wait and if you can’t get along to one this live three disc set is a good substitute.
