Rising Stars Revisited: NIKK GUNNS

One of our first Rising Stars interviews way back in 2002, Nikk Gunns is also a reviewer for GRTR! and he still managers time to sing with a new band on the horizon…

What are you currently up to? (recording, gigs, plans etc.)

Unfortunately, I had to take some time out to deal with a granulated voice box, needed months of therapy and voice work and since then I have been playing some cover songs with friends to get the voice back in shape. I am in the process of putting a Purple inspired band together with a keyboard playing friend so keep your ears peeled!!

What have been the highlights of the past ten years for the band?

In the last 10 years I have had some fun with both Reloaded and Rhode Island Red, made some great friends and written some good songs.

How has the music industry and live music scene changed in the past ten years? How has this impacted on the band?

There are not that many live venues for live bands as there was when we started out, but with the advent of itunes you can now release stuff as and when you want without the need for any label backing, and that can only be a good thing.

What is it that drives you all on as musicians?

Knowing that other people still enjoy the same influences as we do, and over the last few years some of these influential bands have started to play live and release stuff again too.

How do you think the live music scene may look in five to ten years’ time given the fact that a lot of the 70’s and 80’s bands will have stopped touring by then?

I’m afaid I do not hold out too much hope for the future. “You’ve Been Cowelled” comes to mind- he has, for a quick profit, virtually killed off the UK’s musical future by bringing is mass produced music for the masses. He probably feels no shame…….

Message for your fans…

If you’re still out there, thanks.
