Will WALLNER / Vivien VAIN

(Ed’s note: this CD will be re-issued by Metal Mind in the autumn)

This guitarist and vocalist duo have produced a fine rock album, plenty of polished shred, and more name guests than the Queen’s garden party.

The keyboard led intro (Tony Carey) builds to Dreamstealer, a solid track with some 80s vocals and pounding rhythms, and lots of screaming guitar. Then there’s Streets Of Rage – a melodic chunky number that drives and pounds, bass and drums really kicking.

Fourteen Twenty Eight is a slower moodier track, while All That I Want has a prog nod.

Vain’s vocals, high yet powerful, are reminiscent of Hammers Rule, or a beefed up Heavy Pettin’. And Wallner can clearly shred and solo with the best, but can grind out a decent riff too.

Aside the aforementioned Tony Carey, keyboard duties with Derek Sherinian, the bass is covered by Rudy Sarzo, Tony Franklin and Jimmy Bain, and the drums by Brian Tichy, Carmine Appice and his brother Vinny. A stellar cast and a rather good album.
