CIRCLE 7, MORRE

CIRCLE 7 – In Between

Self Release (Release Date – Out Now)

Circle 7 are a 5 piece from San Diego. This is the band’s second album, the first being released back in 2009, which was followed up by many rounds of touring.

Listening through this album was like listening to Stone Temple Pilots playing through Metallica’s Black album. Post grunge with a very heavy bassline and grinding riffs. Vocally, singer Simon Alcantara does sound like Scott Wieland, which is no bad thing, and he puts in a good performance. The thing is though that Metallica have done the definitive version of the Black album already, so whilst this is a decent album with some good songs, ‘Dare’ and ‘Chasing Bullets’ spring to mind, there is nothing particularly earth shattering or life affirming here.

Not bad then, but there is better out there.

MORRE – Morphine

Melodic Revolution Records ( Release Date – Out Now)

When a new CD arrives I like to listen to it before reading the accompanying blurb so as to not pre judge the release and to give it a fair hearing. This also allows you to play the ‘guess where the band are from’ game. By the time I had finished listening to Morphine I had guessed many countries, America, Azerbaijan and Turkey to name but a few, but it turns out the guys are Canadian, what do I know ??

The band mix a bit of prog with shades of country and a large dollop of Eastern mystique. The first couple of numbers wouldn’t be out of place on a Fish album with similar guitar parts and Balkan sounding melodies. The songs tend to be a bit hit and miss, all are well played though with some good songwriting on show.

One good example of the variety on show is the song ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’, luckily not a Bette Midler cover version, but a good blues harmonica workout. That is then followed by ‘Under The Sun’ which has a Caribbean flavour to it, as I said hard to pin these guys down

This is an interesting album which is hard to pigeon-hole. Not sure what demographic they are trying to attract, but they cover plenty of bases just in case !
