Inside Out (Released 11th September) www.nealmorse.com
Neal Morse is a very busy man and with his new solo album he will be competing with Flying Colors, the other band he has been involved in, for many people’s best of lists for 2012 I am sure. Joining him are his long term musical companions Randy George and Mike Portnoy, plus Paul Gilbert guests on one song.
Now I must get the prog rock delight out of the way first…the thirty three minutes long ‘World Without End’. It starts with an instrumental section before the vocals kick in and there are more musical ideas and tempo changes contained in this song than many bands have on their albums. Superb headphone listening and a song that reveals more delights on each subsequent listen.
The title track has been released as a single/YouTube video and successfully melds a pop sensibility in the chorus with a more prog rock leaning in the music. Personally I think ‘Weathering Sky’ is a more instant song with soaring choruses and some delightful keyboards.
‘Freak’ has a clever lyric and brings out his Christian beliefs, although he never preaches more uses his faith to create positive lyrics. I am big fan of harmony vocals and acapella so was in seventh heaven listening to ‘Thoughts Part V’. The vocal arrangements are stunning on this and the song finishes with a 70′s approved instrumental work out, similar to bands like Camel and Gentle Giant in their prime.
How does he keep making such consistently high quality music? However he does it long may it continue and this album easily stands up as some of his best music.
