Sacred Mother Tongue recently played in China, a smart move given that continent’s emerging thirst for all things western. And they also landed themselves a glowing full page review in ‘Classic Rock’. With a new album on the way early next year (‘Out Of The Darkness’), this four track sampler includes a live track from that gig plus three others.

SMT will no doubt get little boys (and Chinamen) sweating but their brand of metallic riffage is fairly predictable. Yes they have Andy James but whilst his guitaring is suitably muscular there’s nothing really inventive here and I can only think he’s been worn down over the years by a surfeit of instructional videos. An exciting live band, maybe, but fairly perfunctory on this showing.
