Frontiers www.frontiers.it
For those of you who don’t know Triumph are Canada’s 2nd biggest rock trio – behind the mighty Rush of course. The three original members of Triumph, Gil Moore (vocals/drums), Mike Levine (bass) and Rik Emmett (guitars), reformed for a one off concert at the 2008 Sweden Rock Festival after splitting from Emmett in 1988 and finally calling it a day in 1993 after the tour for their “Edge of Excess” release. Frontiers have finally – 4 years after the event seems a little slow – got around to releasing a record of the event. The full release is a double DVD/CD package but as usual Frontiers only release a promo of the music – for the record the DVD has exactly the same running order but with an added documentary.
The music cannot be faulted apart from the extending of “Blinding Light Show” and “Rock’n’Roll Machine” with instrumental sections. The track listing is very similar to that of their live “Stages” release of 1985 minus the tracks from “Thunder Seven” which is a shame as this is my personal favourite release. Things kick off in identical fashion with “When The Lights Go Down” followed by the classic “Lay It On The Line”. The classics keep on coming with “Never Surrender”, “I Live For The Weekend” and “Magic Power” amongst others. Triumph have more than enough originals to fill a set list but still cover “Rocky Mountain Way” for some reason (and yes I know it was on their “Rock’n’Roll Machine” album from 1977 J).
A point deducted for the lack of DVD and another for the omission of any “Thunder Seven” or “Sport Of Kings” material…but overall enjoyable…now if only Frontiers could persuade them to go back into the studio.
