Live At The NEC Oct 24 1989 (2CD + DVD)
This lavish set is exclusive to Gonzo multi media – you won’t find it anywhere else. And it really is worth searching out, a lovely package.
In a DVD sized box you get a 2CD of the of the show, which kicks off with the acoustic medley of Time And A Word / Owner Of A Lonely Heart / Teakbois, which is really a vocal and guitar highlight, before moving onto Clap and Mood For A Day. Rick Wakeman’s solo leads into Long Distance Runaround, which is a great song, and builds into a very King Crimson-esque drum solo from Bill Bruford. Birthright, And You And I, All Good People and a 19 minutes Close To The Edge (full on jazzy prog at its best) complete disc 1. Where some of the earlier tracks were more solo spotlights, Close To The Edge sees the whole band (augmented by bassist Tony Levin) come together nicely.
Disc 2 continues with a drum / bass duet and more Yes classics, closing with Roundabout and Starship Trooper. Overall it’s a good show, well recorded, some great music, but it is marred by the solo extravagances and lack of talking to the crowd between songs.
Disc 3 is a 26 minute DVD of footage recorded by second pianist Julian Colbeck – very home movie-ish but is fun, and interesting to fans. Between soundchecks, backstage chats, close-ups of equipment, and live shots, it’s all good stuff.
The original press release is reproduced and the booklet has plenty of artwork, info on the band members and details of the tour.
A good package.
