DEACON BLUE – The Hipsters

Deacon Blue - The Hipster

Edsel [Release date: 24.09.12]

With Ricky Ross being a semi-permanent radio fixture it’s almost as if Deacon Blue have never been away.  It’s something of a surprise therefore to discover that The Hipsters is only the band’s 6th studio album, and only their second since they folded in 1994. Of course, there’s been reunion gigs and Ross has followed a solo career and established himself as a broadcaster in the intervening years, but The Hipsters is the band’s first new material for over a decade and is scheduled for release to cash in on the band’s 25th anniversary tour this autumn.

As the latest chapter in the Deacon Blue story it adds no fresh dimensions to the band’s story, but neatly bridges the classic sound of their late eighties glory days and that of Ross’s own output.

Like most of us, they’ve mellowed down the years, but the Ross/McIntosh harmonising is unmistakeable and The Hipsters will sit easy with the Radio 2 audience.  And while it breaks no new ground, it’s a slick and classy set that fans will consider well worth the wait.
