The latest in the ‘Classic Albums’ series looks at Peter Gabriel’s 1986 album ‘So’. This album really catapulted Peter Gabriel into the big time and was a massive selling album with four hit singles lifted off the album.
The main part of the DVD has interviews with Peter Gabriel along with the musicians and producers who worked on the album including Laurie Anderson, Manu Katche, Tony Levin and Daniel Lanois. It looks at the development of each song in detail and what comes through the programme is how much time and effort went into producing the album, taking nearly a year to complete. Co-producer Daniel Lanois shows how they built up percussion and that Peter Gabriel used many takes to create a final song, something which surprised session drummer Manu Katche who was used to playing in one take and then leaving! There are snippets of the videos from the single releases and live footage to break the interviews up.
Bonus material includes a more in-depth series of interviews with the Aardman Animation crew on the making of the ‘Sledgehammer’ and how Peter Gabriel became more involved with Amnesty International and human rights in general.
A fascinating insight although I can only see ardent fans watching this more than a couple of times. The DVD also forms part of the 25th anniversary box set of ‘So’.
