THE RECKONING – Need To Breathe

Atlantic Records (Release Date – out now)

Need To Breathe is the fourth album by The Reckoning and stateside it has already proved to be a massive hit clocking up No. 1 positions in both the Billboard rock and Christian charts and peaking at no.6 in the national chart.

The band produce uplifting, folk tinged Americana rock, but on a grand scale, these tracks are written to touch the poor punters stuck at the rear of some American stadium when witnessing the band live. The main men in the band are brothers Bear and Bo Rinehart who between them write all the songs. The brothers manage to fill each track with multi-layered instrumentals and vocals which build throughout into a crescendo of joyous noise.

I did mention the ‘C’ word earlier, yup the band are Christian rockers and there are a lot of bible references and symbolism throughout the lyrics, to be honest though I only found this out by reading the band’s wiki page and it certainly didn’t change the way I approached the album. Tracks like ‘Drive All Night’ which rocks along nicely, the haunting ‘A Place Only You Can Go’ and my personal favourite, ‘White Fences’, are fantastic songs whatever the subject matter contained within.

This is a great album which any fan of folk rock/ Americana would do well to have in their collection, there are a couple of commercially friendly tracks on the album that don’t work as well which do bring down the final score a bit, but overall this is a top notch release.
