VORPAL NOMAD – Hyperborea

Metalodic Records (Out Now )

The accompanying biog provided with this disc contains the lofty claim ‘ the best power metal CD you will ever hear’, so does it meet these high standards ? No is the simple answer, however this album is a decent power metal effort.

Vorpal Nomad hail from Colombia and their other claim, that they are the only Colombian power metal outfit, is a bit more believable. The band have been together for a couple of years and are heavily influenced by German power metal outfits with Helloween and Gamma Ray both coming in for name checks. Musically the album is fairly formulaic with all the trademark power metal ingredients added to the mix with heavy, fast rhythm section, blistering melodic riffs and powerful vocals all present and correct.

Lyrically things are a bit hit and miss, although ridiculous lyrics and power metal do tend to go hand in hand, but songs like ‘The Mad Hatter’ and ‘Jack o’ Lantern’ prove that perhaps English is not the band’s first language.

So not the best power metal CD ever, in fact it would struggle to bother the top fifty to be honest. That said though it is a good effort and there are some excellent moments that show promise, maybe if they make the same claim with every release they will get there eventually?
