Guitarist Jeff Summers has been busy this year with Mick Underwood’s Glory Road and Weapon UK have a new album out very soon…
How is the new Weapon UK album coming along?
The Weapon album is now finished and should be releases early next year. It’s been a while coming but hopefully will be worth the wait.
What was it like learning the Gillan songs and do you keep faithful to the solos or add in your won little touches here & there?
I love playing the Gillan songs. I grew up with this stuff :) Micks an inspiration to play with and all the guys are fantastic musicians in Glory Road. Playing Bernie’s guitar parts are right up my street! He’s a brilliant, natural musician and I learned from him as I grew up. I try to keep his spirit and excitement in what I do, but keep my own personality too. That’s what Mick wants also…
Top five albums.
To be fair, I rarely get time to listen to new music. And I’ve not heard a great deal if anything special in rock this year. There’s some good stuff out there, but it’s not very original to my ears I’ve been re-discovering stuff like Mel Torme, (no relation to Bernie) Joe Bonnamassa, Jon Lord and some early Judas Priest. Can’t think of a really great album this year .
Deep Purple in Rock
Van Halen 1
Led Zeppelin II
Thin Lizzy – live n Dangerous
Queen II
Any recent books you have read that you would recommend?
I’m just reading “the Hobbit” again and recently read “the Stone Monkey” by Jeffrey Deaver (Bone Collector etc.)
Best re-issue.
Remachined would be my favourite reissue this year. I know it’s not strictly a reissue but the Vai, Hughes version of Highway Star is stunning.
Highs and lows of 2012.
Highs and lows would be; Weapon back out there working again. Playing festivals and gigs in the UK, Italy, Belgium, Bulgaria etc. making the new album and playing again with Danny, Ian and PJ Working with Mick and the lads in Glory Road, covering songs that I loved growing up and putting my spin on them. On a personal level, meeting my 1 year old Grandson for the first time takes some beating . No real lows in there…
Any tips for bands/musicians to keep an eye on in 2013?
The NWoBHM is on the resurgence and some of the bands are better than ever. The new album fro Gaskin is a cracker and also watch out for the new Weapon UK album. It’s gonna raise a few eyebrows :)
