COCKNEY REJECTS – East End Babylon

Cadiz Music (Release Date – 12th Nov 2012)

Old punks never die, they just hone their musical skills and release excellent hard rock/ metal albums as is the case here. Cockney Rejects have been dishing out their views on the world in a hard and heavy fashion since 1978. Formed by brothers Jeff and Mick Geggus, the band were always at the heavier end of the punk spectrum and their live shows frequently descended into a riot, mostly due to the bands lyrical focus on football and street violence which back in the late 70’s and early 80’s were often one and the same.

This album is the band’s first in 5 years and it is a bit of a cracker. The punk attitude is still well in place, as are the Geggus brothers, but musically the band owe more to Motorhead than their punk brethren. Opener ‘Your Country Needs You’ sets the stall out nicely, a hard rocking affair with vitriolic lyrics and surprisingly intricate guitar work. Other highlights include ‘I Love Being Me’,  a one-finger salute to anyone questioning the band members’ looks and attitude, the incendiary ‘ICF’ which again stirs up old football rivalries and ‘East End Babylon’ which for me is the best track on the album, which starts heavy, has an almost busker like mid-section, then concludes in a raucous fashion.

‘East End Babylon’ is also the title of the band’s soon to be released documentary, which tells the story of the band from conception to present day. Judging by the quality of this release the Cockney Rejects’ story is far from over.
