CUDDLY SHARK – Body Mass Index EP

Armellodie Records (Release date – Out Now)

This EP is a precursor to Cuddly Shark’s new album’ The Road To Ugly’ which is due early in 2013. Jagged indie rock is what you get here, short, sharp tracks that bring to mind Weezer and The Pixies. Title track ‘Body Mass Index’ is a prime example, a jerky guitar riff coupled with quirky lyrics and all clocking in at 2 minutes and 6 seconds. For me though, the short acoustic track ‘ The Man You Want’ that rounds off the EP is the most impressive.

This is a decent EP and according to the band’s blurb they are endorsed by actor Kevin McKidd, so who am I to argue with such a fine actor ?

CENTRE EXCUSE – Generation Z EP

New Motion Records (Release Date – Out now)

Synth led rockers Centre Excuse hail from England’s smallest county, Rutland. This is the trio’s second EP and it’s not too bad. Melodic, dance inspired rock is what the band master in, they claim their influences are a mix of New Order, Depeche Mode, Blink 182 and Nirvana and you can hear traces of all in each track. Songs of note were ‘MTV Generation’ which is a driving, catchy rocker and ‘It’s Okay’ which has a great hook in the chorus.

This is a good EP which is worthy of a listen.

TRASH MONROE – Addiction Of Duplicities pt 1

Self Release (Release Date – 12th Nov 2012)

Skunk Anansie fronted by Pat Benatar is probably the closest comparison I can draw after listening to the two tracks featured here. The first track ‘S.O.B’ is the best of the two and is a Tool inspired rocker. The other track ‘Stupid Again’ is a longer track and takes a while to get going’ it has a decent mid section though.

This release is the first part of a two part EP release with the second instalment due in January, not too sure I will be rushing out to track that one down.

LEXIGRAM – Lexigram

Self Release (Release date – out now)

Lexigram appear to be slightly unhinged, their music most certainly is, SOAD fighting it out with Rush in the studio is the best description I can find. This is a prog metal EP to challenge the listener but it is also accessible enough as to not alienate the casual listener either. There are four tracks featured here, three originals and a choice cover which I will come to shortly. The best of the originals is ‘Flagellation’ which is deep in System Of A Down territory and twists and turns constantly throughout the track. The cover version mentioned is none other than Floyd’s ‘Welcome To The Machine’ and the guys do a cracking job on it, adding a heavier guitar which gives extra weight to the track.

This is a good EP with some original ideas and skillful playing. It will be interesting to see what they come up with next.
