DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT – Epicloud

The musical genius that is Devin Townsend is back, although this is an album of highly addictive pop metal/hard tunes and not the Ziltoid sequel he was apparently planning – that is coming next! This album also features the vocal talents of Anneke van Giersbergen who is best known for her work in the Gathering.

Now this album, like any Devin Townsend album, is like Marmite you will either love it or loathe it. Me? I love it! From the opening gospel (yes that’s right gospel) refrains of ‘Effervescent’ through the closing song and gospel comeback on ‘Angel’ there is not a duff song in sight. It is a truly uplifting musical experience from ‘True North’ where Anneke’s vocals blend seamlessly with Devin’s through to the reworked ‘Kingdom’.

There is the fists-in-the-air party metal of ‘Liberation’, a real beast of a tune. ‘Save Our Now’ could just about make daytime radio although the layered guitars and pounding drums could scare off some less hardy souls. Reminded me a little of Ayreon. ‘Divine’ is a smooth, almost trippy tune and highlights Devin’s quieter, more reflective side.

This new album is a perfect place to start for listeners new to his music. Those who enjoyed ‘Addicted’ and his earlier Project albums will also find this a joy to listen to, it is only those who like the Strapping Young Lad era that will feel short changed. Still as the great man himself says in interviews his music is not for everyone. Play loud and let the sun shine in on your world…
