The End Records ( Release date – Out now)
James Iha will be familiar to most as the guitarist in The Smashing Pumpkins. This though is his first solo release in 15 years and it shows a mellower side than his work with The Pumpkins.
Although Iha has gathered together a large number of collaborators on this album including Karen O and Nick Zinner from the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs and Nina Persson from the Cardigans, It is most definitely a solo affair with James taking on all guitars and vocals.
As stated, this is an altogether mellow affair with Iha in a reflective and laid back mood, late night background music at your local wine bar perhaps. Most of the tracks featured are pleasant, indie pop numbers, there is though the odd quirky track, especially ‘Appetite’ which put me in mind of Yellow Submarine era Beatles, his ‘I Am The Walrus’ if you like.
Ultimately though there is little to inspire here, it’s all a bit too low key to inspire any enthusiasm. Don’t give up the day job James…
