MYCELIA – Isolator

Self Release (Release Date – out now)

When I popped this EP in my laptop, the ever reliable iTunes had it labelled as ‘pop’. Listening to it though, it is about as far removed from pop as you can get. This is a mix of fast and furious technical metal, complete with breakneck, precision guitar work and pummelling rhythms interspersed with quieter instrumental interludes.

Opener ‘Population: zero’ is one of the quieter tracks which builds atmospherically and then leads into ‘The Acardiac’ which then proceeds to remove your face, such is the ferocity of the band’s delivery. Marc F provides the death metal style barks over the blistering guitar work of  Mike, this is full on stuff. The direction changes again on the track ‘Paradoxical Axiom’ which is  an electronica outing before again returning to rabid metal on closing track ‘Octane’ after which you will need a lie down in a darkened room.

This is not for the faint of heart and will have limited appeal, but if you like a musical challenge then this release most certainly provides the goods.
