WORLD FIRE BRIGADE – Spreading My Wings

Frostbyte Records (Release Date – out now)

The three members of World Fire Brigade have collectively sold over 10 million records between them. The three gentlemen in question are Brett Scallions, frontman of Fuel, Sean Danielsen, singer and guitarist in Smile Empty Soul and Eddie Wohl, producer for Anthrax, Ill Nino and 36 Crazy Fists amongst others. Getting together originally to write songs, they soon realised they had a spark together and recording ensued.

The guys made the right decision as this is a fine, heavy, post grunge album. After a quick intro track the trio kick off with album title track ‘Spreading My Wings’, a heavy, drum led track which sounds like Stone Temple Pilots meeting Alterbridge for a scrap down a dark alley with Soil standing by to hold the jackets. Brett provides great vocals which are equalled by the guitar playing of Sean, you can tell these guy are seasoned pros as it all sounds effortless.

Over the course of the 14 tracks on the album there are many highlights from the crunching ‘Take Me Away, which also features Rob Caggiano from Anthrax on guitar, to the short acoustic number ‘Fly’ which shows a more subtle side to the band’s songwriting. All songs though are well written and feature great harmonies and melodies aplenty.

Usually an album with 14 tracks tails off towards the end when the dreaded filler tracks appear but for me it is the last three tracks on the disc which are the best, ‘Never Saw The Wall’, which is a heavy track with a very catchy chorus, ‘Free and Sane’, which is a slow building monster of a track and ‘One’, which has a more commercial edge to it.

This is an impressive album that should push the 10 million album sales figure up a notch or two. The guys maybe didn’t intended to record this material themselves, but I think a lot of people will be glad they did.
