(3DVD) Eagle Vision
Across 3 discs and over 8 hours of running time, this 11 chapter documentary follows the rock/metal family tree (think Headbangers Ball, VH1 et al) and tries to document the much debated history of rock and metal. Sam Dunn takes us to his first ever Wacken (as is typical with such documentaries things do tend to jump around Zoo TV style, especially at the beginning).
There is a LOT here and a lot of work has gone into it. While much may be debated (or even debateable) it’s presented in typical MTV fashion and largely done well.
Each Chapter takes on a different segment, from pre rock through the blues influence to US Metal, UK Metal, NWoHM then thrash, grunge and etc. While having different sections is nice, as usu there is too much overlap with some bands to pigeon hole them.
There was far too much to plough through but some of the 300 interviews do look and sound good. From members of The Kinks to Deep Purple to Metallica, Slayer and Soundgarden to Alice Cooper.
While it’s extensive and informative it’s a very hefty set, and some parts could be a tad more succinct, like I said over 8 hours. It’s a lot of viewing you’ll need to spread over a week or two, and it’s not something you’ll want to watch over and over.
Well packaged.
