Eagle Vision
Filmed almost a year ago, on February 9th 2012, this live show was streamed to mark the release of McCartney’s “Kisses On The Bottom” album. Recorded at the Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, the 13 song set is intercut with interview footage with not only McCartney but the likes of Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, Joe Walsh, Diana Krall and producer Tommy LiPuma- all of which make guest appearances on the album or the live broadcast. There is also rehearsal footage and coverage of McCartney receiving his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in front of this historic studio.
With Krall acting as musical director and her band backing him, McCartney faithfully and respectfully covers the likes of Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Fats Waller, Benny Goodman and Sam Cooke. The band of superb jazz players behind him and with his voice suiting the material, this feels like some of McCartney’s best work in years. With the footage subtlety switching between black and white and colour, there is an authentic feel to what you are seeing as well as what you are listening to.
Highlights amongst the set are King Cole’s “It’s Only A Paper Moon”, “Sinatra’s “We Three (My Echo, My Shadow and Me)” and “My One and Only Love”, Crosby’s “Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive”, Cooke’s “Get Yourself Another Fool” and McCartney’s own “My Valentine”- the latter written for his new wife Nancy.
The DVD comes in a 40 page hardback book and contains a host of bonus features. These include 6 versions of the video for “My Valentine”, all directed by McCartney himself and featuring Natalie Portman and Johnny Depp, the making of the video, album photo shoots and press interviews.
All in all, this is a great package for any Paul McCartney fan and another fine release from those folks at Eagle Vision.
