Valery Records (Release date – out now)
Supernova is the third album from Italian AOR outfit The Fire. The band have been together for seven years and have toured with some big names including Deep Purple, Alice Cooper and Fall Out Boy amongst others. The band are led by Olly Riva, former frontman of Shandon, Italian SKA punks of some note. This latest album though is about as far removed from SKA punk as you can get.
The Fire produce polished, melodic, pop rock with hints of Queen, ELO and U2 in parts. The U2 influence is most evident in the guitar sound with good use being made of the delay pedal and multi layered riffs.
The album starts out well with the opening three tracks proving to be catchy, poppy songs. You can though get too much of a good thing and as the album progresses the tracks all become very similar and you are soon craving something a bit more ballsy. One track, ‘Mr Pain’, just about hits the mark but falls short whilst ‘Waltzin’ Monnalisa’ gets too close to Panic At The Disco for comfort.
There are things to like here and the odd track in isolation would be fine but to sit through a whole album takes a bit of stamina.
