HVK Records (Release Date – 15.04.13)
‘New Life’ is a four track debut EP from Cry Havoc who hail from Devon. The guys have been playing together since 2009 and have been gigging extensively in that time. The accompanying info sheet likens the band’s sound to a mix of Guns n’ Roses and Pantera, on listening to the opening track though my first thought was of Avenged Sevenfold which stuck with me throughout the four tracks. I can also hear the Pantera influence, especially in the guitar riffs, however the guys have great melodies and harmonies to bring to the metal party as well which all add up to an impressive sound.
All tracks are well crafted, blending together good songwriting, intricate playing and frantic, rock solid rhythms. The stand out track for me though is ‘Alone’ which strays into early Slayer territory. This song wouldn’t have been out of place on Show No Mercy which is no faint praise. The drumming of Eliott Lipscombe is outstanding on this track, I’m sure Dave Lombardo would be impressed.
For a debut EP this one is a cracker, hard, heavy and a great platform from which the band should move on to bigger and better things if there is any justice in the world.
