MOTHERSHIP – Mothership

Ripple Records (Release date – 12.01.13)

This album is the latest release from the fantastic Ripple Records who have a habit of finding excellent, no nonsense, hard rocking bands and in Mothership they have come up trumps once again. The nucleus of this Texan trio are the Juett brothers, Kyle on bass and vocals and Kelley on guitar who were raised on a diet of ‘70’s classic rock from their father John’s record collection.

As well as classic rock there are also elements of stoner and desert rock evident throughout, opening track ‘Hallucination’ is a good example of this. The instrumental track starts off quietly and slowly building to the point where the guys launch into a MASSIVE riff, sounding like a super sized Sabbath. This album is all about the riff, huge, heavy slabs laid down by Kyle and Kelley whilst drummer Judge Smith grooves away for all he is worth putting down a solid backbeat.

The guitar work of Kelley impresses throughout. As well as his solid riffs his soloing is first rate as is well demonstrated on ‘Eagle Soars’ where he plays up a storm. All the tracks featured though are of the highest standard from the opener right through to the NWOBHM like ‘Lunar Master’ that closes the album.

Mothership have come up with an excellent debut which is a hard rocking masterclass. If you are ever planning to ride through the gates of Hell on a custom Harley, then make sure you have this album playing loudly in the background, it would be the perfect soundtrack.
