OPERATION MAJORITY – Ratrace Lullabyes

Self Release  (Release date – Out Now)

Operation Majority are from the frozen wastes of Oulo in Finland. The eclectic trio have been a unit for 8 years and this album has brought together songs written and honed over that period.

The first thing that strikes you about the band are the distinctive vocals of  Petri Kangas. Anyone familiar with Vic Reeves take on the pub singer will instantly draw comparisons, not sure if it is the accent but you will be hard pushed to make out a word he says, it is quite amusing though. Petri is also the guitarist in the band and fortunately his fret work is better than his singing.

Now, to return to the ‘eclectic’ tag. Musically the guys blend hard and heavy riffage with proggy passages which do head into jazz territory, not somewhere I am that keen to venture. There are moments of brilliance, Petri’s guitar work is outstanding at times and intertwines to great effect with Timo Heikkinen’s intricate bass playing. Arto Keskitalo on drums is a real powerhouse who thrashes away behind the kit in tireless fashion.

There are some interesting ideas on this album and judging by the cover the guys have a sense of humour, but to me the overall effect is a bit too much to take in. However if you like hard rock and have a taste for jazz then Operation Majority may just be what you have been looking for as when they nail it, they are a class act.
