(Hold Your Horses Records)
Something of a well-kept secret, Barry Palmer is singer whose presence has permeated pop and rock since the 1970′s, and whose principal ‘claim to fame’ is being Mike Oldfield’s singer of choice on the 1984 ‘Crime Of Passion’ single and ‘Discovery’ album.
He was also the vocalist with German prog band Triumvirat for a spell in the mid to late 1970s, and the voice behind the massive 1974 hit ‘The Bump’ which was marketed as being by Kenny.
But his roots stem back to early 1970s folk rock and a Scarborough band – Brave New World – who, at their peak, supported the likes of Lindisfarne. For one reason or another that project never came to fruition and having never sought fame and fortune, or the spotlight, he’s been happy since to perform with numerous bands, take time out to deal with personal affairs and focus on his songwriting.
Now, after 40 years in the business, his debut album under his own name is independently released and the title is very much an insight into the rich tapestry of 1960s influenced songs (and Beatles in particular, as revealed by ‘Dear John’).
The vocals, as you would expect from a seasoned session man are warm and ‘on the money’ and the general ambience of the set is one geared to after hours or Radio 2 listening. The pedigree shines through, in an Al Stewart sort of way, but I have to be honest and say it’s not likely to set pulses racing, but neither would it have anyone reaching for the ‘eject’ button.
Ultimately, it’s a quality piece of work perfect for chilling out to after a hard day at the coal face. But sadly, it’s unlikely to raise Barry’s profile. ***
