A new band with some familiar names, the most notable being Queensryche drummer Scott Rockenfield. Then on vocals we have Goran Edman (Malmsteen/Covered Call) and the band is the idea of Italian guitarists Walter Cianciusi and Dario Parente.
Plenty on offer here from the Beatles like ‘Calf Love’ (a strange song title it has to be said!) and ‘The Backstabbers Around Us’ mixes modern rock with a decent AOR melody. ‘Be Myself’ is a strange one mixing vocal effects and a pummelling drum beat recalling latter day Queensryche.
Another one with a Queensryche flavour is ‘No Happy Ending’. Goran Edman does sound like Geoff Tate in his prime on this one. ‘Growing Apart’ is the album highlight for me, lovely vocal harmonies on the verses and choruses. The cover of the Rolling Stones ballad ‘As Time Goes By’ provides a fitting end to the album, the vocals blending well with the acoustic guitars.
As you’d expect Goran Edman puts in a good performance and Scott Rockenfield plays perhaps in a more straight ahead style than his main band.
Given the personnel involved not quite the hard rock/metal album I was expecting, although it is great fun and a cracking album full of top tunes.
