Street Symphonies Records (Release date – out now)
Stone Orange are the first band I have encountered from Slovenia and if this is the standard of rock in Ljubljana it may be worth further exploration. The four piece have been together since 2003 and this is their second album.
Melodic hard rock is the band’s forte with many elements taken from west coast America circa the mid-eighties. Opening track ‘Broken Man’ sets the tone well and contains a great multi layered chorus. ‘Pride And Pain’ is another good example of thier use of melody and the odd key change here and there which all adds up to excellent song writing and makes for an interesting album.
The first ballad, ‘It Keeps On Raining’, reminded me of an Iron Maiden track, I could imagine Bruce singing this as I listened which is praise indeed. Two tracks do stand out for me, namely ‘ Whites Of Their Eyes’, which again features a killer chorus of epic proportions and ‘Frozen Sky’ which is an interesting instrumental track complete with a narrative about space exploration. This then leads into the final track, ‘The Age Of Stars’, which is another excellent soft rock masterpiece.
This is an impressive album with great songs throughout. It may have taken the band 6 years to make it to album number two but like revolution and independence, good things come to those who wait.
