Album review: BRANDY ZDAN – Lone Hunter

 BRANDY ZDAN - Lone Hunter

Cavalier Recordings [Release date 09.09.13]

The Canadian folk scene that is a hotbed of talent that will launch an ‘ABC of Canadian Music’ tour in October featuring Brandy Zdan (as in Zinedine), Po’ Girl Awna Teixeira, and Cara Luft who will play individual and collective sets on all dates.

Emerging for the first time as a solo artist, ‘Lone Hunter’ is Zdan’s first solo release – a 6 track EP (or mini album, take your pick) that sees her explore a number of genres from traditional folk/country to a more mainstream crossover/adult pop sound.  Her seductive vocals stand to the fore in each song, underpinned by rich guitar tones, solid rhythms and even some subtle electronica.

Recorded and produced by George Reiff (Lincoln Durham) it also features cameos by members of The Trishas (who recruited Zdan in 2011 for her six string, lap steel and accordion skills) and Ricky Ray Jackson on pedal steel.

As a ‘taster’ it sends a potent message in a style reminiscent of Maria McKee circa her Lone Justice/early solo career period.  The ‘twang’ loaded opener ‘Mourning Dove’ is particularly impressive signalling that Zdan is ‘one to watch’ and the ABC tour one to catch if it comes to a town near you.  ***1/2
