Real World Records
Joseph Arthur has built up a loyal following of fans as well as plaudits from fellow musicians including Peter Gabriel. This two disc set is loosely based on a fictionalised character, Boogie Christ, who bears some resemblance to Joseph Arthur. The songs are a mix of new recordings and some older tunes which feature an impressive roster of guests including Ben Arthur, legendary drummer Jim Keltner and Garth Hudson of the Band.
Disc one is the strongest set of songs from the title track through to ‘Saint Of Impossible Causes’ where a neat lyric melds well with an instant pop melody. He certainly spends a lot of time on the musical arrangements be it the choral sounds on ‘Wait For Your Lights’ or the acoustic ‘I Miss The Zoo’ with a subdued Hammond organ rounding out the sound.
Over on the second disc ‘Maybe Yes’ could be Tom Petty jamming with Green On Red, whilst ‘Missy Baba’ with its piano and snare drum beat is blissful on the ears. ‘In The City’ adds in brass and female backing vocals, highlighting his more soulful leanings. That’s another plus of this album the musical variety on offer.
His fans will of course lap this one up and Joseph Arthur is deserving of your time and attention as he has that knack of matching storytelling lyrics with damn fine tunes.
