EP Round-up: ANTHEM LIFE, BLEAK FALLS, LEFT FOR RED

ANTHEM LIFE – Sins Of Salvation EP

Self Release ( Release date – out now)

Hailing from Southern Finland, Anthem Life have been together for four years. Influenced by Metallica, Stone Sour and Avenged Sevenfold ,the band play metal with plenty of melody. Opener ‘Sevn’ is a bit of a slow starter but once up and running it contains some good riffs and a hooky chorus.

Feature track ‘Stand Ur Grnd’ is an acoustic lead track, very much in the Stone Sour mould, but frontman Miika Matilainen is no Cory Taylor and vocally things sound a bit tortured. There is also another version of the track with grand piano accompaniment which is quite an ordeal to sit through.

Not an EP I will be hurrying back to.

BLEAK FALLS – The Grass Gets No Greener

Self-release (Release date – 18th November 2013)

Life not getting you down? Everything peachy in your world? Happy with your lot in life? If so, you need Bleak Falls to bring a little misery to your being. Bleak Falls don’t do happy, each song is a depressing, angst filled number which would wipe the smile off any face. Hardcore metal is the band’s weapon of choice, down-tuned, chugging and as black as a very black thing. Vocalist Rudi Ridgewell provides a wailing, mournful vocal which only serves to bring things down further.

The guys play well enough, sounding not unlike the Deftones but by the end you will be so low you really won’t care.

LEFT FOR RED – Vol 002 – Mercy Flight

Self-release (Release date – 25th November 2013)

In the three years the band have been together they have been a busy lot. They released their first EP in 2011, played with the likes of Chimaira and Breed 77 and have won the Kerrang! TNA competition.

This then is the band’s latest offering. The three tracks featured are slabs of heavy metal laced with melodic passages and, at times, a proggy edge. Tool were one band that came to my mind as I listened through, especially on the second track ‘My Obsession’ which is a slower paced track which sweeps you along.  For me final track, ‘Mercy Flight’, is the best of the three on offer, but even so the EP didn’t really grab me as it should have.
