Eagle Rock (CD/DVD) [Release date 07.10.13]
Joe Cocker’s career started in 1961, although he didn’t release a solo album until 1969. Remarkably the songs he is best known for singing were written by other people, yet he has the ability to make them his very own- and there are several examples of that on this “Live at Montreux 1987” CD/DVD, and with a warmth and familiarity to his voice it is no surprise that his career has lasted this long.
Probably the two songs he is best known for singing, The Beatles’ “With A Little Help From My Friends” and his 1982 hit single “Up Where We Belong” from the Richard Gere film “An Officer and A Gentlemen” are both here but this 13 song set shows much more to Cocker than that. Whether the soul/blues of “Watching The River Flow”, the emotionally charged Billy Preston/Dennis Wilson penned “You Are So Beautiful” or the solid renditions of “Shelter Me” and Dylan’s “Seven Days”, you would be hard pushed to pick any track that stands out above the others.
The CD also comes with a bonus DVD of the same show so you can really go to town in surround sound if you choose.
These days Joe Cocker is still releasing albums and playing live and remains one of the UK’s most outstanding voices.
