Self-release (release date – out now)
Belfast’s Baleful Creed originally got together as a covers band back in 2009. Playing covers soon gave way to song writing and the band performing original numbers which they have honed and developed over the last few years and this, their debut album, finds the band in fighting form.
The four piece play a groove laden stoner rock with hints of Kyuss and Alice In Chains in the mix. The self-titled opening track proves to be a straight forward hard rocker with fuzzed up bass and a galloping rhythm. ‘Autumn Leaves’ follows and features a chunky riff with AIC style dual vocals which work well.
The pace slows a bit for the bluesy ‘Crazy Man’ whilst the longest track on the album, ‘Misanthrope’, again visits AIC territory. ‘Hex’ and ‘Her Promise’ are both shorter, punchier numbers which I think suit the band well and have the most impact. Rounding the album off is ‘Suffer In Silence’ which again is built on a big guitar riff, provided by Greg Finlay and John Allan, coupled with some excellent vocal harmonies.
The band are gaining a great live reputation and got through to the finals of the prestigious ‘Highway To Hell’ competition in 2013. With this release the band have shown that they have some great songs and the ability to rock with the best of them. It does lack originality though which may see them stuck at club level, prove me wrong guys! ***
