[Released 08.09.14]
This is the third album by UK based symphonic metal band Winter In Eden and they have upped the ante for this one, recording it in the Netherlands and it’s been produced by Ruud Jolie (Within Temptation). The album also features guest vocals by Damian Wilson (Threshold/Headspace) and Jermain van der Bogt (For All We Know/Ayreon).
Songs like ‘Critical Mass Part 1 – Burdened’ would give Within Temptation a run for their money. The chorus is simply immense! ‘Toxicate’ sounds like a female fronted Threshold, whilst ‘It’s Not Enough’ allows Steve Johnson to flex his musical creative muscles with a wondrous musical backdrop. It’s nice to have say the cello played live rather than recreated via various computer generated strings.
‘Before It Began’ is another song with an instant refrain and one for a single release, whilst ‘Constant Tomorrows’ is a real OTT blast of symphonic metal! Winter In Eden really get the balance right between a decent melody and then adding in the symphonic and guitar elements, as some bands just throw everything in hoping something works!
Symphonic metal is a crowded genre and you need something special to stand out, luckily Winter In Eden have that with the songs and the vocals of Vicky Johnson – impressive throughout the album. ****
