Album review: MASSIVE – Full Throttle

Massive - Full Throttle

Earache Records  [Release date: 21.07.14]

Melbourne, Australia appears to be a hotbed of rock at the moment with more bands appearing from the city every month. One of the best to emerge are Massive who have taken a smattering of all that’s good in hard rock and added their own shine to the package.

Full Throttle is the band’s debut album and it’s a bit of a cracker. Things get off to a good start with the high octane track ‘One By One’ which rattles along at a fast pace. Bringing together elements of AC/DC, Guns ‘n’ Roses and Motley Crue amongst others the guys produce highly entertaining hard rock with quality delivery and writing.

The songs are big party anthems with the emphasis on melody and a big chorus, every song has the potential to be a huge sing along live. One song that really caught my attention is ‘Ghost’ which is one of the slower numbers on the album and contains great harmonies and a killer chorus which makes the song stand out from the rest.

The album was re-released with four extra tracks including excellent covers of AC/DC’s ‘If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It)’ and Aerosmith’s ‘Rats In The Cellar’ but it is testament to the band that these songs sound as if they could be Massive originals.

This is a very aptly titled album because the band are on full throttle throughout and the quality on show is exceptional. The phrase ‘all killer, no filler’ has been used to describe many an album and this is another to add to the list as there is not a duff track here. The guys also put on a fantastic live show and coupled with this album it looks like Melbourne may have spawned yet another winner.  ****
