Album review: STONEWIRE – When The Crow Flies

StoneWire - When The Crow Flies

22.11 Records [Release date 01.12.14]

Strangely, StoneWire’s debut album “When The Crow Flies” turned up just after I witnessed their performance at the Legends Festival in Great Yarmouth. I was impressed by the bands live performance and was again on hearing the album.

It’s a big rock record with a southern blues slant and features the powerful vocals of front woman Sky Hunter- and if you think she’s got a powerful voice on record, go and see the band live, you will not be disappointed. The album was produced by drummer Robert Glasner and was mixed by Voodoo Six’s bassist Tony Newton and a great job they have done too as they have captured the dirty blues rock and power of the bands live performance. Also on board for “When The Crow Flies” is The Almighty/ex-Alice Cooper guitarist Pete Friesen who provides additional guitar throughout.

Musically “Southern Honey” punches like Skynyrd whilst “Mama They’ll Never Know” has an air of Zeppelin about it. There are a couple of big, slow burning tracks in “Don’t you” and title track “When The Crow Flies” and a 7 minute epic in “Fix You”. However, it is the guitars on the slower “One Last Time” and the layered acoustic bonus track that almost steal the show here. The album’s highlights are rounded off by “Walk The Line”, “Favourite Bitch”, “Winters Hold” and “Vamanos”.

Normally at this point I would ask the question about the band’s ability to replicate the album in a live environment. This time I don’t need to bother so instead will advise you to go and see the band if you get the chance. ****
